FIFA referee appointment sparks outrage in Nigeria as South African officials are assigned to the Super Eagles’ World Cup playoff against Gabon

FIFA Referee Appointment has ignited controversy in Nigeria after the world football body assigned a South African officiating crew to handle the Super Eagles’ 2026 World Cup playoff first leg against Gabon.

The decision, confirmed in a FIFA letter dated 3 November 2025, has drawn sharp criticism from fans and officials who question the neutrality of appointing referees from a country perceived as having strained football relations with Nigeria.

According to the document, Tom Abongile will take charge as centre referee, assisted by compatriots Zakhele Siwela and Akhona Makalima, who will oversee VAR operations.

The referee assessor for the tie, scheduled for 13 November at the Moulay El Hassan Stadium in Rabat, will be from Benin Republic.

A senior Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) official told journalist Osasu Obayiuwana that the federation was “baffled” by FIFA’s choice.

“How can FIFA appoint a South African referee after their sports minister openly said he wished Nigeria would not qualify for the World Cup? South Africa are clearly hostile to us,” the official was quoted as saying.

The development has sparked a storm of reactions online, with fans accusing FIFA of ignoring sensitivities surrounding the fixture.

Media personality @PoojaMedia wrote on X, “In fairness and sentiments, South African officials shouldn’t be appointed by CAF to officiate Nigeria vs Gabon in this World Cup playoff in Morocco.” He referenced a past incident where a South African minister publicly expressed hope that Nigeria would fail to qualify for the World Cup.

“Even the Ref Assessor is from Benin Republic. CAF should rethink this fast,” he added, urging the NFF to lodge a formal protest.

The Super Eagles booked their playoff place after a dramatic win over Benin Republic in October, sealed by a late strike from Frank Onyeka.

The aggregate winner of the two-legged tie between Nigeria and Gabon will progress to face either DR Congo or Cameroon in the final qualification round.

While referee appointments for FIFA tournaments are typically made by the Referees Committee to guarantee neutrality, the use of South African officials in this fixture has heightened tensions among Nigerian supporters.

South Africa’s referees, however, are among the continent’s most seasoned, frequently overseeing CAF Champions League and AFCON matches.

The FIFA referee appointment controversy underscores the growing scrutiny around officiating integrity as the Super Eagles chase their seventh appearance at the World Cup.
