During a recent media chat, Wike revealed that Fubara, accompanied by two governors from the All Progressives Congress (APC), had approached him to plead for peace.
“The President has called for peace severally. Yes, he came. He came with two governors. Unfortunately, the two governors are APC governors. I would not pursue him. And he said he wants peace. Fine,” Wike stated.
However, Wike clarified that Fubara’s plea for peace did not guarantee an immediate resolution. He emphasised that a mere “window” for reconciliation had been opened, and Fubara would need to demonstrate genuine intent through his actions.
“What this means is that there is an open window for you. Take the necessary steps to show really (that) you want peace. Indeed, this is a self-inflicted injury.

He doesn’t need it. When this thing started. I called him. Seyi Makinde was there, Ortom was there. Ikpeazu was there. Ugwuanyi was there. We sat him down,” Wike recounted, highlighting previous attempts at mediation.
He further explained that he had advised Fubara against being influenced by external pressures and urged him to maintain good relations with those who had supported his rise to power.
“They say Wike is trying to control, demand money. They pushed him and pushed him. Governors came, pushed him. Where are they now?” Wike questioned.
Wike warned that even if President Bola Tinubu were to lift any potential state of emergency in Rivers State, peace would not be assured without genuine reconciliation between Fubara and the State House of Assembly.
