Basic education and literacy is one of The Rotary Foundation’s six areas of focus, very well so because of the crucial role literacy plays in the advancement of the human race.

Considering the fact that 17% of the world’s adult population are illiterates, it’s therefore commendable that a massive organisation like rotary, with over 35,000 member clubs around the world and 1.2million members, would bring its focus to this subject every September of every other year.

Designated as Basic Education and Literacy Month, in September, member clubs in over 200 countries are charged to carry out activities and projects that touches on education and improve literacy, with the goal of strengthening the capacity of communities to support basic education and literacy, reduce gender disparity in education, and increase adult literacy, and most importantly support education for all children and literacy for children and adults.

Joining in this year’s course and in a true reflection of Rotary International goals, the Rotary Club of Ikeja-Alausa District 9110 Nigeria has launched the ESSAY CONTEST 2.0 for Junior Secondary School Students Three and Senior Secondary School classes (JSS 3 & SSS Classes).

This special project is basically designed to bring out the genius and inherent talent in Nigeria’s young scholars and also involve them on discourses that bother on national polity through the choice of topic, vis:

“QUALITATIVE EDUCATION AS A PANACEA FOR ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT IN NIGERIA”

Considering the prevailing restriction on large gathering occasioned by the COVID19 Pandemic, the club has decided that the contest will be 100% online, whereby participants can send their essays directly to the official email address of the club (rotaryclubikejaalausa@gmail.com) in order to be entered into the competition.

The contest will reward winning participants as follows:

  • 1st Price N50,000 and RYLA
  • 2nd N30,000 and RYLA
  • 3rd N20,000 and RYLA
  • 7 consolation prices with RYLA tickets

The winners will also be published on Club’s website and will be promoted via all their social media platforms.

Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) is a leadership program coordinated by Rotary Clubs around the globe. Each year, thousands of young people participate in this program. Young people ages 13–30 are sponsored by Rotary Clubs to attend the event run by the club’s district committee.

The contest will be open between September 10th, 2021 and 12noon of September 25th, 2020.
