Ghana thrillingly equals Nigeria World Cup record

Ghana World Cup record equals Nigeria’s tally of six wins after a dramatic 1-0 victory over Panama in their 2026 Group L opener at Toronto Stadium, with Caleb Yirenkyi scoring the winner

The Black Stars of Ghana, led by match-winner Caleb Yirenkyi, secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Panama at Toronto Stadium in Canada on Thursday, June 18, 2026, becoming only the second African nation to record six wins at the FIFA World Cup and equalling Nigeria’s long-standing record.

Yirenkyi struck in the 95th minute of a tense Group L encounter, tapping home from close range after Brandon Thomas-Asante’s surging run and cut-back down the left flank.

The late goal handed Ghana all three points in their opening match and denied Panama their first-ever World Cup point.

Ghana now sit atop Group L alongside England ahead of their next fixture.

The result carries special significance as it takes the Black Stars level with Nigeria, who have also secured six victories from 21 matches.

Cameroon follows with five wins from 26 games, while Morocco, currently with five from 23, could surpass the mark during this tournament.

This triumph marks another proud chapter for the Black Stars, who have qualified for every World Cup since 2006 except the 2018 edition in Russia.

Their journey has featured memorable runs, including the quarter-final appearance in 2010 where they fell to Uruguay in a heartbreaking penalty shootout.

Speaking after the match, Yirenkyi expressed his elation. “This is a special moment for the team and the whole country. We fought until the end and it paid off.”

The performance was particularly impressive given Panama’s resilient display in only their fourth World Cup appearance.

The Central Americans matched the four-time African champions for long stretches, making the result feel somewhat harsh on the debutants.

With Nigeria absent from the 2026 tournament, Ghana, Morocco and Ivory Coast now have a genuine opportunity to move past the Super Eagles’ record of six World Cup wins. Senegal, despite an opening loss to France, maintains one of the strongest win ratios among African sides.

The victory will boost confidence as the Black Stars aim to progress further in a competition where African teams continue to raise the bar, highlighted by Morocco’s landmark semi-final run in Qatar 2022.
