Pep Guardiola ends his Manchester City reign after a 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa, closing a trophy-filled decade marked by emotional scenes

Pep Guardiola, the Manchester City manager, ended his historic tenure at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, May 25, 2026, as Aston Villa defeated Manchester City 2-1 in a Premier League encounter that marked an emotional conclusion to a decade of dominance under the Catalan coach.

The 55-year-old, who confirmed on Friday that he would leave the club after ten years, received a rousing farewell from supporters as he stepped into the stadium surrounded by banners, flags and a newly dedicated stand in his honour.

Guardiola departs Manchester City with 20 trophies, including six Premier League titles and the club’s first UEFA Champions League triumph, cementing his legacy as one of the most influential managers in English football history.

The atmosphere at the Etihad Stadium was charged with emotion as Bernardo Silva and John Stones also made what is expected to be their final appearances for the club.

Silva, who captained the side, was visibly emotional even before kick-off, reflecting the weight of a farewell moment that extended beyond just one manager.

Tributes continued throughout the match, including multiple guard of honour moments for departing players, as supporters paid tribute to years of success and consistency.

On the pitch, Aston Villa capitalised on a disjointed Manchester City performance to secure a 2-1 victory, further strengthening their impressive end to the season.

Antoine Semenyo opened the scoring for City with a composed finish from a set-piece, but Villa responded strongly in the second half.

Ollie Watkins proved decisive, scoring twice after the break, including a clinical finish following a defensive error and another swift counterattack that sealed the win for Unai Emery’s side.

Watkins’ performance also underlined his growing influence at international level as he continues to push for a leading role with England ahead of major tournaments.

Manchester City briefly believed they had salvaged a point when Phil Foden struck a powerful effort into the net, only for a VAR review to rule it out for offside.

The decision added a controversial note to an already emotional afternoon, with uncertainty surrounding the margin of the call and frustration among supporters.

Guardiola leaves Manchester City after a transformative spell that reshaped English football, delivering sustained domestic success and European glory.

From tactical innovation to record-breaking consistency, his era at the club is widely regarded as one of the most successful in modern football.

As he departed the pitch for the final time, Guardiola acknowledged the crowd in a moment that symbolised the end of a defining chapter for both manager and club.
