OPay extends its N1.2bn scholarship programme to Benue State University, supporting underprivileged students and reinforcing its commitment to youth empowerment and education in Nigeria

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he OPay scholarship programme has reached Benue State University, making it the seventh institution to benefit from the Nigerian fintech giant’s N1.2 billion, 10-year educational support scheme.

The company, which has positioned itself as a leader in financial technology, announced this expansion as part of its broader commitment to youth empowerment and academic development across Nigeria.

The scholarship is designed to alleviate the financial burden on promising but economically disadvantaged students, allowing them to pursue higher education without the weight of tuition fees.

Dauda Gotring, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of OPay, underscored the importance of the initiative in supporting national development through education.

“We are proud to support these future leaders at Benue State University as part of our broader commitment to education and empowerment,” he said.

“Education plays a vital role in nation-building, and this scholarship is our way of helping young Nigerians reach their full potential.”

The initiative targets students across various disciplines, particularly those with academic merit but limited financial means.

By reducing economic barriers, OPay aims to foster a generation of graduates capable of contributing meaningfully to national progress.

Reacting to the development, Professor Tor Iorapuu, Vice Chancellor (Admin) of Benue State University, hailed the scholarship as a turning point for the institution.

“This generous donation from OPay marks a significant milestone. It provides a crucial safety net, ensuring that students can focus on their education.

This contribution will have a lasting impact, empowering students to pursue their academic goals with confidence and stability,” he noted.

OPay confirmed that the programme has already been successfully implemented in six other universities across the country, and more institutions are set to benefit in the coming years.

The scholarship is part of the company’s corporate social responsibility strategy, demonstrating its belief in education as a catalyst for social progress and sustainable development.
