Ikolaje-Idiroko kingmakers deny social media claims of new Oniko, confirm election postponed and urge calm as selection process continues

The Ikolaje-Idiroko Council of Kingmakers in Ipokia Local Government Area has denied reports that a new Oniko of Ikolaje-Idiroko has been appointed, warning the public against self-imposition.

The council, in a statement jointly signed by senior kingmakers including the Aro, Oloorode Mathew, and the Balogun, Daniel Edun, said it was aware of social media posts suggesting that an individual had been declared Oniko-elect, describing such reports as false.

The Oniko stool became vacant in May 2025 following the death of the late Oba John Ojo.

Three princes from the Odunfa Ruling House — Sunday Adekambi Olayode, Jonah Ariori Olagorioye, and Adebotiwa Ade — have formally applied for the throne.

According to the council, tradition and established procedures require that an election be conducted under the supervision of Ipokia Local Government whenever multiple candidates seek the throne. The prince who secures the highest number of votes is declared Oba-elect.

The statement confirmed that the election, originally scheduled for Monday, February 9, 2026, was postponed following advice from the Secretary to the Local Government, who cited security concerns.

The kingmakers urged indigenes to remain calm, law-abiding, and patient while reaffirming their commitment to conducting the election fairly and transparently.

“The selection process is simple and straightforward, and we remain committed to doing what is right and in the best interest of the community,” the statement said, assuring that the public will be adequately informed as developments unfold.
