The Chairman of the Committee, Engr. Suleiman Alapansanpa, announced that the Ilorin Emirate Durbar 2026 will hold on Thursday, May 28, 2026, at the Kwara Baseball Park in Adewole, Ilorin.
He said the theme of the celebration, “Prosperity in Diversity,” reflects the long-standing peaceful coexistence of ethnic groups within Ilorin Emirate, including Fulani, Yoruba, Nupe, Baruba, Hausa, Kanuri, Gobirawa and others.
According to him, the Ilorin Emirate Durbar 2026 remains a powerful cultural symbol that celebrates unity, scholarship and commerce while reinforcing the emirate’s identity as a model of peaceful coexistence.
“The theme captures the very essence of Ilorin itself. For centuries, Ilorin has stood as a remarkable meeting point of civilisations, cultures, languages, scholarship, and commerce,” Alapansanpa said.
“In a world increasingly confronted by division, intolerance, and social fragmentation, Ilorin continues to offer a timeless example of peaceful coexistence, mutual respect, and shared destiny.”
The committee disclosed that no fewer than 500 horses will participate in the grand procession, describing the equestrian display as one of the most iconic highlights of the festival.
Security arrangements, according to organisers, have been significantly strengthened in view of prevailing national concerns, with collaboration involving the army, police, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and other agencies.
“For security, we are very serious about it. We want to tighten security with the power of God,” Alapansanpa said, adding that surveillance systems, including CCTV cameras, will be installed at strategic locations.
He emphasised that the Ilorin Emirate Durbar 2026 will remain strictly non-partisan, insisting that the cultural celebration belongs to all sons and daughters of the emirate regardless of political or religious affiliation.
“There would be CCTV cameras mounted at strategic locations, and there will be no room for politics there,” he added.
As part of efforts to modernise the festival, the committee announced the creation of a Directorate of Storytelling, Digital Media and Cultural Documentation to preserve and project Ilorin’s heritage globally.
The initiative will focus on digital archiving, documentary storytelling and cultural education aimed at connecting younger generations to the emirate’s history while attracting international attention.
Alapansanpa stressed that the use of technology is intended to complement tradition, not replace it, describing it as a tool for cultural preservation and education.
The committee also unveiled the Ilorin Durbar Vendor Fair and Cultural Market Experience, designed to boost local enterprise, tourism and creative industries during the celebration.
The initiative is expected to provide opportunities for artisans, fashion designers, food vendors and entrepreneurs while stimulating economic activity across Ilorin.
According to the chairman, preparations have already included registration of about 77 households to support community participation in the festival.
The Ilorin Emirate Durbar 2026 is widely regarded as a major annual cultural spectacle held shortly after Eid-al-Adha, featuring a royal procession led by the Emir of Ilorin, accompanied by horsemen, traditional musicians and thousands of participants in vibrant attire.
