According to court records and Lakshmi’s testimony, Kishandas applied a suspicious brown liquid—allegedly a skin-lightening medicine—on her body.
When she complained about the strong acid-like smell, he used an incense stick to ignite her.
Adding to the horrific act, he poured the remaining liquid on her as she burned and then fled the scene.
Despite her family rushing her to the hospital, Lakshmi later succumbed to her injuries.
Presiding Judge Rahul Choudhary condemned the attack as “a crime against humanity,” categorizing the case under the “rarest of the rare.
” He said, “It shocks the conscience of humanity and cannot be imagined in a civilized society.”
The public prosecutor described the verdict as “historic,” hoping it would deter others from similar brutal acts fueled by colourism.
“A young woman in her early 20s was mercilessly murdered. She was a sister, a daughter, loved by many. If we don’t protect our daughters, who will?” he said.
This harrowing case shines a stark light on the ongoing issue of colourism in India, where darker-skinned women frequently face prejudice, discrimination, and violence.
Despite awareness campaigns, societal preference for lighter skin remains deeply entrenched, perpetuating harm and suffering for many women.
