John Samuel, ex-convict and robbery kingpin, arrested in Lagos for masterminding violent gold jewellery attack at Allen Avenue

John Samuel, a 28-year-old notorious armed robbery kingpin, hired assassin and convicted murderer, has been arrested by the Lagos State Police Command after masterminding a violent gold jewellery robbery in Ikeja last month.

According to a statement from the Command, Samuel, an ex-convict from Akwa Ibom State, was tracked to his hideout in Epe and apprehended by operatives at about 2:00pm on 19 September 2025.

He had only recently been released from prison after serving a six-year sentence for armed robbery.

Police investigations revealed that on 18 August 2025, Samuel, armed with an English pistol, shot and wounded businessman Gbenga Obama before dispossessing him of a gold necklace and other valuables in broad daylight at Gbajobi Street, Allen Avenue.

CCTV footage captured the suspect pulling the trigger while his accomplice waited on a motorcycle for their swift escape.

The victim, who sustained serious gunshot injuries, has since been treated and discharged from hospital. Samuel later confessed to selling the stolen necklace for ₦4 million, well below its actual value.

Confirming the arrest, the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Olohudare Jimoh, praised the gallantry of the operatives and assured residents that efforts are ongoing to track down the remaining gang members.

“The suspect is vicious and notorious for shooting at victims before dispossessing them of valuables. We will ensure that all his accomplices are brought to justice,” CP Jimoh stated, warning that Lagos has no hiding place for criminals.

The dramatic arrest of John Samuel is being hailed as another breakthrough in the Command’s sustained clampdown on violent crime in the metropolis.
