Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has announced plans to establish a state-owned commercial airline, with operations expected to begin within one year as part of efforts to create employment opportunities for professionally trained pilots from the state.

Yusuf disclosed the plan during the 40th Executive Council Meeting held at the Government House in Kano on Thursday, where he received several awards, including recognition from the Kano State Pilot Association for supporting aviation training initiatives.

The Kano Governor Abba Yusuf Unveils State-Owned Airline Plan announcement is aimed at creating a platform where Kano-trained aviation professionals can gain employment while contributing to the development of the state’s aviation sector.

“By the grace of God, the proposed Kano Airline will commence operations within the next one year. We are committed to providing all the necessary support to actualise the project and ensure its successful operation,” Yusuf said.

The governor said he was impressed by the performance of Kano-sponsored pilots who completed training in Jordan under an aviation development programme initiated by a previous administration.

He added that his government would continue supporting young aviation professionals by creating opportunities for them to apply their skills.

“I am impressed by the outstanding performance of our young pilots. We will continue to support them and create opportunities for them to contribute meaningfully to the development of the aviation sector,” Yusuf said.

The proposed airline represents a significant step in Kano’s aviation ambitions, particularly as the state seeks to maximise the skills of locally trained pilots and strengthen economic opportunities for young professionals.

A notable highlight of the announcement was the recognition given to the governor by aviation stakeholders.

The Kano State Pilot Association praised Yusuf’s administration for supporting members in completing training requirements and assisting with the revalidation of professional flying licences.

Chairman of the association, Naziru Ibrahim, thanked the governor for his support while appealing for additional assistance to help members obtain final certifications needed to operate commercial flights within Nigeria and internationally.

“We appreciate Your Excellency for your continued support, particularly in helping our members revalidate their flying licences,” Ibrahim said.

“We appeal for further assistance to enable them obtain their final certifications, which will qualify them to operate commercial flights both within Nigeria and internationally.”

The planned airline will add Kano to the growing list of Nigerian states exploring aviation ventures as governments seek new investment opportunities, improve connectivity and create specialised employment pathways.
