In a renewed effort to ensure a cleaner, safer, and healthier environment, the Lagos State Government has announced a total ban on street trading, hawking, building illegal structures on drainage systems, and displaying of wares on walkways across the state.
The Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, led by Barr. Tokunbo Wahab, is taking proactive measures to enforce strict compliance to the environmental sanitation laws and declare a zero-tolerance policy towards street trading, hawking, and other illegal activities.

The decision to implement this ban comes as a result of the nefarious activities of hawkers, who disguise themselves to rob motorists, and street traders, who disrupt the free flow of traffic on highways and streets.
The ban is not only aimed at maintaining a cleaner and more visually appealing environment for the residents of Lagos State, but also at enhancing public safety.
The Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (KAI) has been directed by the commissionerto ensure strict enforcement of the ban. KAI officials will be responsible for monitoring and apprehending offenders engaging in street trading and hawking with violators facing legal consequences as stipulated by the environmental sanitation laws.
“This ban is being implemented for the greater good of the state and its residents. By eliminating the pervasive street trading and hawking activities, the government aims to create a more conducive environment for businesses to thrive and for residents to enjoy improved traffic flow and safety,” Barr. Wahab emphasised.
