The Lagos State Task Force has taken decisive action by arresting eight suspects involved in the sale of contaminated turkey, which had been seized and destroyed by the Nigeria Customs Service.
According to spokesperson Gbadeyan Abdulraheem, the agency’s operation followed reports from Lagos State House of Assembly member Rasheed Shabi and Oloja of Epe, Oba Kamorudeen Animashaun. They alerted authorities to the illegal sale of turkeys that had been initially condemned and set ablaze at a dump site.
During a raid in Epe, task force officials discovered several cartons of the contaminated turkey in shanties near the dump site. The suspects were apprehended along with harmful weapons.
Oba Kamorudeen praised the swift response of the task force, emphasizing the potential public health risks if the contaminated meat had entered the market, particularly amid ongoing efforts to contain a cholera outbreak in parts of Lagos State.
Task Force Chairman CSP Adetayo Akerele underscored the dangers of consuming such products, which could lead to serious health issues like cancer, lung, or liver diseases. He emphasized the agency’s commitment to protecting Lagosians from such hazards, ensuring that all recovered contaminated goods are kept secured and the arrested suspects will face legal charges.
