The directive was issued by the Commissioner of Police, Tijani Fatai, as part of efforts to streamline traffic management and restore order to Lagos’ often congested road network.
Announcing the decision on Tuesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, said the Lagos Taskforce traffic withdrawal is intended to promote professionalism, accountability, and clarity among enforcement agencies.
“The Commissioner of Police has directed the immediate and complete withdrawal of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation and Special Offences Unit from traffic control and traffic contravention enforcement across the state,” the statement read.
The Command clarified that while the Taskforce will no longer handle traffic-related duties, it will continue to perform all other statutory functions without interruption.
Authorities also cautioned residents against assuming that all personnel identified as “Taskforce” belong to the same unit, noting that multiple enforcement bodies operate under similar designations in Lagos.
Residents and motorists were advised to verify the identity of officials before making allegations, particularly in matters involving traffic enforcement.
The move is seen as a significant step towards reorganising Lagos’ traffic control system, which has long faced criticism over overlapping responsibilities among agencies and inconsistent enforcement practices.
