Lamine Yamal late penalty rescues Barcelona as Newcastle are held 1–1 in their Champions League round of 16 first leg at St James’ Park

Spanish forward Lamine Yamal struck a dramatic stoppage-time penalty to earn FC Barcelona a 1–1 draw against Newcastle United in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League round of 16 tie at St James’ Park on Tuesday.

The visitors were on the brink of defeat after winger Harvey Barnes fired Newcastle ahead four minutes from time, only for Yamal to convert from the spot deep into added time after a foul in the penalty area.

The late intervention denied the Premier League side what would have been a valuable advantage ahead of next week’s return leg in Catalonia.

The dramatic equaliser means the tie remains finely balanced before the second leg at Camp Nou, while Barcelona’s recent four-match winning run across all competitions also came to an end.

Newcastle began the match with energy and purpose, creating early opportunities through Sandro Tonali and Anthony Elanga, both of whom forced saves from Barcelona goalkeeper Joan García inside the opening quarter of an hour.

Barcelona gradually settled into the contest and nearly benefited from a defensive mishap when Dan Burn came close to turning a delivery from Fermín López into his own net.

Despite Newcastle’s attacking intent, the first half ended goalless. A cross from Elanga narrowly evaded striker William Osula at the far post, leaving the home crowd sensing a breakthrough without seeing one materialise.

The intensity continued after the interval. Osula fired over following a through ball from Lewis Hall, while Barcelona threatened at the other end when Robert Lewandowski swept Raphinha’s cross wide of the target.

Substitute Jacob Murphy also came close for Newcastle, volleying over from close range, before Barnes struck the post in the 74th minute. A rebound effort from Joelinton was ruled out for offside, denying the hosts a deserved lead.

The breakthrough eventually arrived with four minutes remaining. Murphy delivered a cross into the area and Barnes met it with a composed volley that sparked wild celebrations at St James’ Park.

However, the moment of triumph proved short-lived. Defender Malick Thiaw tripped Dani Olmo in the penalty area during stoppage time, allowing the teenage sensation Yamal to step forward and calmly convert the decisive spot kick.

The powerful late strike ensured Barcelona avoided defeat and left the contest delicately poised heading into the decisive second leg next week.
