Council of Legal Education says the photograph showed attire it considered inconsistent with professional standards and decorum

The Council of Legal Education of the Nigerian Law School on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, approved the withdrawal of the prize for the best graduating student in professional ethics after an “inappropriate” photograph of the recipient circulated online.

Aderonke Osho, secretary to the council and director of administration, disclosed the decision in a statement, saying the council considered the circumstances surrounding the award before approving its withdrawal.

Osho said the attire worn by the recipient in the photograph was considered inconsistent with the professional standards and decorum expected of students of the Nigerian Law School.

“The council considered the circumstances surrounding the award of the prize for the best graduating student in professional ethics and approved the withdrawal of the prize from the recipient,” Osho said.

She added that the decision followed the circulation of a photograph online depicting the recipient in attire the council considered inconsistent with professional standards and decorum.

The council did not identify the awardee in its statement or specify the graduating set involved.

However, records of the 2026 Nigerian Law School awards show that Ogechi C. Ifezie was listed as the first-prize winner for Professional Ethics. (Punch Newspapers)

Ifezie, who studied at the Nigerian Law School’s Lagos Campus after graduating from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, was among the students recognised for outstanding performance during the 2026 Call to Bar ceremonies.

The award was presented as part of a broader recognition of academic excellence across the Bar Part II programme.

Other course leaders included Ifeoluwa Ajaiyeoba for Civil Litigation, Timilehin Adebayo for Criminal Litigation, Emmanuel Oyelami for Corporate Law and Francis Obiahu Alu for Property Law. (Punch Newspapers)

The decision has created an unusual contrast between academic achievement and professional expectations, particularly because the withdrawn award was specifically linked to professional ethics.

The Council of Legal Education also announced sanctions against two students found culpable of indiscipline-related misconduct, although it did not disclose their identities or provide details of the sanctions.

The council said the measures formed part of its responsibility to uphold discipline and professional conduct among students of the Nigerian Law School.

The development comes against the backdrop of the institution’s role in preparing law graduates for entry into the Nigerian legal profession.
