This collaborative effort involves the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy (FMCIDE), the National Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (NCAIR), and the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA). The programme’s primary aim is to enable the development of impactful AI solutions within Nigeria.

The comprehensive 8-month programme is specifically designed to support early-stage startups that are leveraging open-source Llama models.

Their focus will be on addressing critical national and regional challenges across four high-priority areas: Agriculture, Security & Safety, Healthcare, and a ‘wild card’ category to encourage bold, original AI applications with high impact potential in any other sector.

Emphasising open innovation, the accelerator includes a six-week incubation phase. During this period, selected teams will benefit from technical training and mentorship provided by seasoned AI experts and industry leaders.

This will be followed by six months of extended support, granting participants access to additional technical resources and opportunities to further develop their solutions.

This partnership marks a major step forward in our mission to develop a thriving AI ecosystem in Nigeria.

Sade Dada, Head of Public Policy, Anglophone West Africa at Meta, articulated the company’s enthusiasm: “We’re excited to partner with the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy to launch this AI Accelerator in Nigeria — a country with a robust innovation ecosystem. By making open-source AI more accessible and relevant to local challenges, we aim to enable the development of solutions that can drive national development and are impactful for communities.”

Nigeria’s rapidly expanding tech ecosystem and its deep pool of AI talent make it an ideal launchpad for scalable, homegrown AI solutions.

The accelerator aims to empower local innovators with cutting-edge tools, infrastructure, and crucial support to build responsibly using open-source Large Language Models (LLMs) such as Meta’s Llama.

Dr. ‘Bosun Tijani, Honourable Minister of Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy of Nigeria, echoed this sentiment, stating, “This partnership marks a major step forward in our mission to develop a thriving AI ecosystem in Nigeria.”

He further added, “We see AI as a key driver for national development, and this program by Meta will equip innovators with the right tools and guidance to tackle some of our most pressing issues.”

This initiative underscores Meta’s broader commitment to democratising access to responsible AI and fostering local innovation within Nigeria.
