Joseph Aloba, father of late Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, has insisted that his son’s remains will not be reburied until the ongoing DNA test involving Mohbad’s son, Liam Aloba, is concluded.

Aloba made the statement after proceedings at the Magistrate Court in Ikorodu on Tuesday, where the family continued its legal efforts to ensure that the paternity test is conducted through a transparent and court-approved process.

The family has maintained that the Mohbad DNA Test is a crucial step in their search for clarity over issues surrounding the singer’s death and the paternity dispute involving his grandson.

Mohbad died on September 12, 2023, and his remains were later exhumed for an autopsy as part of investigations into the circumstances surrounding his death. The dispute over Liam’s paternity has continued nearly three years after the singer’s passing.

Speaking after the court session, Aloba said the DNA process must be completed before any decision is made regarding his son’s reburial.

“This DNA test is a must. The issue goes beyond paternity. We are trying to unravel the circumstances surrounding Mohbad’s death,” he said.

He added that the singer’s remains remain important to the family’s pursuit of justice.

“We must conclude the DNA test before burying him again because his body remains vital evidence,” Aloba stated.

The matter was adjourned until August 11, 2026, for further hearing on an application filed by the Aloba family’s legal team.

Counsel to the family, Oladayo Ogungbe, told the court that the family was seeking a DNA examination conducted by a credible laboratory approved by the court, with all parties given access to the process and results.

Ogungbe also alleged that laboratories reportedly nominated by Mohbad’s widow, Omowunmi Aloba, and a Lagos State Government welfare officer had not carried out the test.

The family also opposed another legal action reportedly filed by Omowunmi seeking a separate DNA test, describing it as unnecessary and arguing that the process should be handled through a mutually accepted arrangement.

The prolonged dispute has continued to generate public reactions, with some Nigerians supporting the family’s demand for a transparent procedure while others have questioned the length of time taken to resolve the matter.
