The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), through its National President Comrade Olushola Oladoja, sounded the caution during a rally in Asaba on Wednesday.
Speaking via his assistant, Comrade Jeremiah Friday Ohomah, Oladoja said the move was intended to draw attention to the challenges confronting local refineries and to press the federal government to stabilise domestic fuel production.
He disclosed that similar rallies were taking place simultaneously in Abuja and Lagos, describing them as a coordinated signal to both the government and industry leaders that Nigeria’s youth are “fully awake” and determined to defend national interests.
According to him, any deliberate action or policy that frustrates or undermines private refinery investments will trigger nationwide highway occupations by Nigerian students across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
“Nigeria is blessed with abundant crude oil resources but remains a paradoxical importer of refined petroleum products,” Oladoja lamented.
“Our national refineries in Port Harcourt, Kaduna, and Warri have been deliberately crippled for decades through sabotage, mismanagement, and collusion between local and foreign oil interests.”
He called on the federal government to protect and promote local refining ventures such as the Dangote Refinery, which he described as a cornerstone for achieving energy independence and stabilising the nation’s economy.
The statement comes amid growing concern over fuel import dependency and the slow pace of refining sector reforms.
