Niger State tanker explosion kills 31 and injures 17 after residents scooped spilled petrol. Governor Bago offers condolences; investigations ongoing

Governor Mohammed Bago of Niger State has expressed profound condolences to the families affected by a tragic tanker explosion that claimed at least 31 lives and left 17 others injured.

The devastating accident occurred around 2:40 p.m. on October 21, 2025, when a tanker transporting petrol fell on its side along the Bida/Agaie highway near Essa village.

According to Niger State Police Public Relations Officer Wasiu Abiodun, several residents rushed to the accident scene to scoop the spilled petrol. While doing so, the tanker suddenly caught fire, resulting in a deadly inferno.

“Forty-eight persons were affected by the fire. Sadly, 31 lost their lives at the spot, while 17 sustained varying degrees of injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment in nearby hospitals,” Abiodun said.

The police and other security agencies swiftly responded to the scene to carry out rescue operations. Investigations are ongoing to identify the tanker’s driver and owner.

Reacting to the incident, Governor Bago described the tragedy as “worrisome, unfortunate, and pathetic,” urging the public to refrain from scooping petrol from fallen tankers despite repeated warnings.

“The governor prays that Allah will repose the souls of those who died and grant quick recovery to the injured. He implores people to value their lives, no matter the circumstances,” Bago’s Chief Press Secretary, Bologi Ibrahim, stated.

This heartbreaking event adds to the series of tanker-related explosions across Nigeria. Earlier this year, a similar incident in Niger State claimed over 70 lives.

Recent investigations reveal that more than 400 people have died nationwide due to tanker explosions linked to petrol scooping in the past year, prompting the Federal Government to initiate a national awareness campaign against such dangerous acts.
