Five governors and key ministers will join the Toronto conference as Nigeria seeks fresh diaspora capital, partnerships and expertise
President Bola Tinubu has approved a high-level federal delegation led by his Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, to attend the inaugural Nigeria Diaspora Economic Conference in Toronto, Canada, from August 12 to 15, 2026, as Nigeria seeks to turn its large overseas community into a stronger source of investment, expertise and economic partnerships.

The delegation will include five state governors, several federal ministers and senior officials from key economic and regulatory agencies, underscoring the Federal Government’s push to make the conference an outcome-focused platform rather than a conventional diaspora gathering.
The governors are Babagana Zulum of Borno State, Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State, Uba Sani of Kaduna State, Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State and Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State.
Federal ministers expected to participate include Foreign Affairs Minister Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment Jumoke Oduwole and Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.
The delegation will also draw officials from the Central Bank of Nigeria, Nigeria Customs Service, Nigeria Immigration Service, Federal Inland Revenue Service, Nigeria Investment Promotion Commission, Nigeria Export Promotion Council and the National Information Technology Development Agency.
Their presence is intended to give potential investors direct access to institutions responsible for monetary policy, taxation, trade facilitation, investment promotion, exports and digital development.
The conference, themed “Invest Nigeria, Thrive Abroad”, is being organised by the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission in collaboration with the Nigerian High Commission in Ottawa, the Canadian High Commission in Abuja and other partners.
NiDCOM says the event is designed to mobilise diaspora capital, expertise and international networks towards investment, job creation and sustainable economic growth in Nigeria.
Its official programme places particular emphasis on practical deal-making, business-to-business matchmaking, partnerships and investment implementation.
NiDCOM Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Abike Dabiri-Erewa said the calibre of Nigerian officials attending reflected the administration’s interest in deepening economic ties with Canada.
“The calibre of officials attending the conference demonstrates President Tinubu’s commitment to strengthening economic cooperation between Nigeria and Canada through trade, investment and diaspora engagement,” Dabiri-Erewa said.
She described the event as more than a conference, saying it was being structured as an “outcome-driven investment platform” intended to connect international investors with investment-ready opportunities in Nigeria.
The conference will focus on sectors including agriculture, technology, manufacturing, infrastructure, energy, healthcare and the digital economy.
NiDCOM’s published programme expands those areas to include fintech and ICT, food and agro-processing, mining, renewable energy, pharmaceuticals, real estate, banking, capital markets and asset management.
The emphasis reflects a broader effort by the government to move the relationship with Nigerians abroad beyond the traditional dependence on remittances for household consumption.
NiDCOM has said Nigerians in the diaspora contribute more than $20 billion annually to the Nigerian economy and that the objective of NiDEC is to channel more of that financial capacity, professional expertise and international market access into productive investment at home. Nigeria remains one of Africa’s major recipients of remittances, making the diaspora an important source of foreign exchange and household income. The investment challenge, however, is to create conditions that encourage more of those resources to flow into businesses, infrastructure and long-term economic activity.
That ambition is reflected in the design of the Toronto gathering. NiDCOM identifies credibility of investment projects, regulatory complexity, information gaps and perceptions of risk as some of the obstacles that can discourage Nigerians abroad from investing in the country.
The conference is therefore expected to provide opportunities for investors to engage directly with government institutions and business operators while exploring specific projects and partnerships.
Canadian officials are also expected to participate, including President of the Treasury Board of Canada Shafqat Ali, Ontario Minister of Citizenship and Multiculturalism Graham McGregor, Ontario legislator Deepak Anand, Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown, Councillor Rod Power and Ontario Minister of Women and Economic Opportunities Charmaine Williams.
Their participation is expected to give the gathering a broader bilateral dimension, particularly as Nigeria seeks to strengthen commercial links with Canada beyond the established diplomatic relationship.
The programme itself extends beyond formal economic discussions. NiDCOM has said the conference will coincide with a week of activities celebrating Nigerian culture and achievement in Canada, including the Flavours of Nigeria Festival and the first Canadian staging of the HEADIES Honors.
The investment component, however, remains central.
The official programme includes capital-market discussions, institutional presentations, high-level sessions on Nigeria-Canada investment opportunities, financial innovation, infrastructure development and public-private partnerships. For the Tinubu administration, the Toronto meeting comes as Nigeria seeks to attract more foreign and diaspora capital while presenting opportunities in sectors capable of supporting employment, exports and economic diversification.
For Nigerians abroad, the conference offers an opportunity to assess those opportunities directly and raise questions about the regulatory and operational conditions that determine whether an investment can succeed.
The success of the initiative will ultimately depend less on the size of the delegation than on what follows the meetings.
Investment commitments, partnerships, financing agreements and projects that move from discussion to implementation will provide a clearer measure of whether the conference achieves its central objective.
For now, the decision to send governors, ministers and economic agencies to Toronto signals a deliberate attempt by the Federal Government to put investment at the heart of its engagement with Nigerians abroad.

As delegates gather under the banner of “Invest Nigeria, Thrive Abroad”, the central question will be whether the strong diaspora network can be translated into equally strong and sustainable economic opportunities at home.
