Nigeria became Africa’s top crude oil exporter to the U.S. in January–August 2025, shipping 33.23 million barrels valued at $2.57 billion
Nigeria has emerged as the leading African exporter of crude oil to the United States between January and August 2025, according to the U.S. Mission in Nigeria.

The country shipped 33.23 million barrels, valued at $2.57 billion, accounting for more than half of all African crude oil exports to the U.S. during the period.
The U.S. Mission posted on X:
“#DidYouKnow that Nigeria was the leading African exporter of crude oil to the United States between January and August 2025, shipping 33.23 million barrels worth $2.57 billion? That’s more than half of all African crude oil exports to the United States during that period.”
The statement highlighted that strong trade ties between Nigeria and the United States help create jobs and drive prosperity on both sides of the Atlantic.

PUNCH Online reports that the U.S. Agricultural Counselor, Chris Bielecki, expects agricultural trade between Nigeria and the U.S. to reach $700 million in 2025.
Meanwhile, data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration show that Nigeria’s imports of crude oil from the U.S. rose by 153% in the first nine months of 2025.
