Nigeria and Saudi Arabia sign a five-year defence pact

Nigeria and Saudi Arabia sign a five-year defence pact to boost military training, intelligence sharing, and joint security operations

Nigeria and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia have signed a five-year Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen defence and military cooperation, Minister of State for Defence Dr. Mohammed Bello Matawalle announced on Tuesday.

The agreement, signed by Dr. Matawalle for Nigeria and Dr. Khaleed H. Al-Biyari for Saudi Arabia, covers military training, intelligence sharing, defence production, and joint operations.

Ahmed Dan Wudil, Dr. Matawalle’s Special Assistant on Media, stated that the MoU is valid for five years and may be renewed for a similar period. The agreement can also be terminated by either party with a three-month written notice.

The Defence Ministry described the pact as timely and strategic, aligning with Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to enhance international security collaborations.

“This agreement reflects our commitment to strengthening international partnerships for sustainable security development,” the statement said.

Officials highlighted that the collaboration is expected to improve Nigeria’s operational capacity, facilitate joint initiatives, and deepen military cooperation, particularly in addressing emerging security challenges across the country and the wider region.

The MoU marks a significant step in expanding bilateral ties, as Nigeria continues to confront heightened insurgency and increased global scrutiny over longstanding security concerns.

Defence authorities emphasised that the partnership would contribute to more effective responses to security threats and enhance overall regional stability.

The agreement also signals both nations’ intent to pursue shared goals in defence innovation, personnel training, and operational readiness, setting a foundation for continued engagement over the next five years.
