WAFCON 2026: Nigeria Super Falcons suffer shock 3-2 defeat to Malawi

Debutants Malawi stunned the defending WAFCON champions in Rabat as Temwa Chawinga's brilliant brace left Nigeria facing an early battle to keep their title defence alive.

WAFCON 2026: Nigeria Super Falcons suffer shock 3-2 defeat to Malawi

Tournament debutants Malawi produced a historic upset on Tuesday after defeating defending champions Nigeria 3-2 in their opening Group C match at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Rabat, Morocco, leaving the Super Falcons with an early setback in their bid for a record-extending 11th continental title.

The result immediately reshaped the group’s outlook and handed the Scorchers one of the finest victories in the nation’s football history.

For much of the evening, the defending champions controlled possession but struggled to break down a disciplined Malawi side that remained organised and dangerous on the counter attack.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 73rd minute when Temwa Chawinga finished clinically before captain Tabitha Chawinga doubled the advantage six minutes later, leaving Nigeria chasing the match.

Nigeria briefly reignited hope when Rasheedat Ajibade calmly converted a penalty deep into stoppage time.

Any thoughts of a dramatic comeback disappeared moments later as Temwa Chawinga struck again to restore Malawi’s two goal cushion.

Substitute Uchenna Kanu pulled another goal back in the closing seconds, but Malawi held firm to seal a famous victory.

The victory fulfilled the confidence Malawi had expressed before kick-off.

Head coach Lovemore Fazili had insisted his side would not travel to Morocco merely to make up the numbers.

“People may underestimate us but we are a good team, capable of causing an upset. We are not resigned victims,” Fazili said before the match.

Captain Tabitha Chawinga echoed that belief before the opening whistle.

“We know Nigeria’s worth. They are a great nation but we must focus on ourselves. Our players need to compete without any inferiority complex,” Chawinga said.

The Chawinga sisters delivered on those words with a powerful performance that underlined why they have become the heartbeat of Malawi’s emerging generation.

Temwa Chawinga’s decisive brace proved the defining moment, while Tabitha Chawinga’s leadership and goal added another remarkable chapter to the country’s first appearance at the continental finals.

The defeat is particularly significant given Nigeria’s recent history. The Super Falcons arrived in Morocco seeking a record extending 11th continental title after producing a dramatic comeback from two goals down to defeat hosts Morocco 3-2 in last year’s final and secure their 10th WAFCON crown.

Expectations remained high despite head coach Justine Madugu warning before the tournament that defending the title would be even more demanding than winning it.

Despite the disappointing start, it does not mean the champions are out of contention.

The expanded 16 team tournament allows the top two teams in each group and the two best third placed teams to reach the quarter finals.

Zambia, who defeated Egypt 6-0 earlier on Tuesday, lead Group C on goal difference ahead of Malawi, while Nigeria sit third before facing Zambia in a crucial second fixture.

For Malawi, the result represents far more than three points. It is a landmark statement from a nation making its WAFCON debut and a compelling reminder that the gap between Africa’s established powers and ambitious newcomers continues to narrow.

For Nigeria, the challenge now is to respond with the resilience that has defined the Super Falcons through decades of continental success.
