The Army announced that it will move quickly against a soldier involved in the tragic death of a commercial bus driver near a military checkpoint in Ondo State.
The incident occurred on Sunday, October 13, 2025, when the bus driver, en route from Akure to Abuja, suffered mechanical problems close to the Akunu checkpoint in Akoko North-East Local Government Area.
Passengers on the vehicle demanded refunds, and one passenger sought assistance from a soldier stationed at the checkpoint to retrieve their fares.
However, the soldier’s response was deemed unprofessional, escalating into a physical altercation with the driver. The Nigerian Army condemned the soldier’s behaviour as contrary to military conduct and rules of engagement.
Upon learning of the incident, Headquarters 32 Artillery Brigade promptly evacuated the injured driver to a medical facility.
The Army took full responsibility for his medical care, transferring him to specialist hospitals. Sadly, the driver passed away on October 14.
Expressing deep sympathy to the bereaved family, the Army pledged to ensure justice is served and disciplinary actions will be taken transparently.
The Brigade also visited the family, promising support for burial expenses and the welfare of the driver’s dependents.
This tragic episode adds to ongoing concerns about alleged military misconduct at checkpoints, a matter that has previously ignited public outrage and calls for increased accountability.
