Anambra Police launch raids ahead

Anambra Police launch coordinated raids across flashpoints to curb violence and secure the state ahead of the November 8 governorship election

Anambra Police have intensified security operations across the state ahead of the November 8 governorship election, with a series of coordinated raids ordered on identified flashpoints.

Commissioner of Police Ikioye Orutugu issued the directive on Tuesday in Awka, warning that the command would not tolerate political thuggery, cult-related violence, or illegal possession of firearms during the election period.

In a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the commissioner said the operation aims to “nip any emerging threats in the bud” and guarantee a peaceful electoral environment.

“Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and Tactical Commanders must intensify intelligence-driven operations and coordinated security raids across identified flashpoints in their areas,” Orutugu stated.

He revealed that intelligence reports suggested some individuals and groups, acting on behalf of political interests, were allegedly mobilising youths for violent activities before and during the polls.

Orutugu stressed that the command remained neutral and non-partisan, reaffirming that its duty is to protect lives and property, safeguard electoral integrity, and enforce the law without fear or favour.

“The Nigeria Police Force is committed to ensuring a free, fair, and credible election. We will not allow any disruption of public peace or intimidation of voters,” he said.

The move comes as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Anambra fully prepared for the governorship election after a week-long readiness assessment tour by a delegation from its Abuja headquarters.

Led by National Commissioner for Election Planning and Monitoring, Rhoda Gumus, the team reviewed logistics, facilities, and security arrangements across several local government areas, including Dunukofia and Oyi.

The commission confirmed that deployment of non-sensitive materials and distribution of Permanent Voter Cards were ongoing smoothly, with assurances that every eligible voter would be attended to.

Gumus urged citizens to cooperate with election officials, while INEC’s Kenneth Ukeagu stressed the importance of transparency: “Every vehicle, every ballot, every form must be properly tracked.”

The combined efforts of INEC and the Anambra Police are aimed at ensuring the upcoming governorship election is conducted peacefully and credibly.
