Obasa games qualifiers begin across Lagos districts as youths compete for N12m in the expanded 2025 multi-sport edition

The Obasa games qualifiers for the 2025 edition have officially commenced across Lagos State’s six educational districts, marking another bold step in the state’s push to strengthen grassroots sports development.

The annual event, organised by Kings Sports International in honour of the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudasiru Obasa, began last Friday at Anwarul Islam College in Agege.

Once a football-only contest, the Obasa Games have evolved into a multi-sport competition featuring boxing, table tennis, chess, scrabble, Ayo Olopon, athletics and football, reflecting a renewed commitment to inclusive youth engagement.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, Moshood Olawale Ajibola, confirmed that six events were held on Monday in District III, covering Lagos Island and Epe, while football fixtures will follow during the final stages.

Ajibola disclosed that competitors from all districts would meet in Agege for the concluding round, with a compelling prize fund of N12m awaiting outstanding performers.

He explained that the qualifying phase began on November 17 and will continue into next week across the remaining districts.

District IV hosted its events on Tuesday, with Ikorodu, Oregun, Badagry and the Agege/Alimosho axis following in sequence as scheduled.

Ajibola noted that the primary aim of the Obasa Games is to nurture young talents by building discipline, character, strategic thinking and leadership skills.

He emphasised that the competition is designed to inspire ambition, promote healthy risk taking and help young people discover their sporting potential.

The multi-sport event runs until December 13 and features participants in two age brackets, the under-15 and under-18 categories.

At the opening ceremony on Sunday, Chairman of the Main Organising Committee and Agege Local Government Chairman, Abdul-Ganiyu Obasa, described the Obasa Games as a powerful platform created to empower emerging talents and offer meaningful opportunities to youths across Lagos.

He reaffirmed that the essence of the initiative is to identify promising athletes and create a nurturing pathway for their growth.
