Five suspects have been arraigned before the Ota Magistrate Court in Ogun State over the alleged attack and obstruction of police officers performing their lawful duties in the Ota area of the state.
The suspects were identified as Morenikeji Badmus, 36; Adedoja Segun, 40; Jeremiah Odise Ugbede Onride, 49; Mike Stephen, 28; and David Odeh, 32.
The incident occurred on October 2, 2026, around The Bells area of Iyana-Iyesi, Ota, when a police patrol team intercepted and arrested a suspect allegedly found in possession of a large quantity of substances suspected to be Indian hemp.
According to the police, the officers handcuffed the suspect and began conveying him to the station when they were allegedly ambushed by a group of people.
The attackers were said to have used cutlasses, stones and bottles during the confrontation, leaving some police personnel injured and damaging the operational vehicle.
The police also alleged that the attack enabled the handcuffed suspect to escape.
Following the incident, the Ogun State Police Command launched an intelligence-led operation to identify and arrest those allegedly involved in the attack.
The command subsequently arrested the five suspects who were brought before the Ota Magistrate Court.
They were arraigned on charges bordering on conspiracy, serious assault on police officers, obstruction of lawful duty and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.
The police said efforts were ongoing to apprehend other suspects who allegedly took part in the attack but remained at large.
Reacting to the development, the Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, said the safety of officers carrying out lawful duties remained a priority for the command.
Ojajuni also urged members of the public to avoid physical confrontation with law enforcement personnel and to channel grievances through established lawful channels.
