“I’m the greatest” – Omah Lay sets Afrobeats talking

Omah Lay best Afrobeats artist claim sparks debate as singer names Burna Boy his only rival in bold podcast statement

Nigerian Afrobeats singer Omah Lay has declared himself the best artiste in the genre over the last two decades, making the bold claim during a recent podcast appearance.

Speaking on the Nando Leaks podcast, Omah Lay said he considers himself the greatest Afrobeats musician of his generation, while naming Burna Boy as the only artist he sees as close competition in terms of talent.

“I am the best in this… when you put the whole Afrobeats category. I don’t wanna be bragging too much, but I am the best in the last 20 years,” he said.

The Omah Lay best Afrobeats artist claim has sparked conversations among fans and industry observers, given the competitive nature of the genre and the presence of globally recognised stars.

While acknowledging that his visual output may not be his strongest area, the singer insisted that his strength lies in the craft of music-making, which he believes sets him apart.

Omah Lay further stated that he does not appreciate being ranked alongside other artistes, stressing that he sees himself above the competition.

He maintained that even when compared with Burna Boy, he ultimately considers himself unmatched.

“The only person I sometimes put myself with is Burna Boy. Burna is talented. Apart from Burna, it is me… I’m the greatest,” he added.

The remarks have added a fresh layer of debate to ongoing discussions about hierarchy and influence within Afrobeats, as artistes increasingly assert their dominance in a rapidly expanding global industry.
