Pep Guardiola regret emerges after he apologises for confronting a cameraman following Manchester City’s 2–1 loss to Newcastle United

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has expressed deep Pep Guardiola regret after admitting he lost his temper with a cameraman in the tense aftermath of City’s 2–1 defeat to Newcastle United on Saturday.

Guardiola stormed onto the pitch at St James’ Park, frustrated by what he felt were several contentious decisions that went against his side.

City had penalty appeals ignored, a possible handball dismissed and a marginal offside call overturned, all of which left the manager visibly incensed.

According to a BBC Sport report on Monday, the Spaniard approached referee Sam Barrott at full-time before pulling the headphones off a cameraman to make a remark. Guardiola later apologised almost immediately.

“I apologised. I feel embarrassed, ashamed when I see it. I don’t like it. I apologised after one second to the cameraman. I am who I am,” he said.

“After 1,000 games, I’m not a perfect person; I make huge mistakes. The reason why is I want to defend my team and my club.”

Guardiola did not disclose what he told the cameraman, but he admitted the moment was not his finest. His emotional reaction capped an already fiery ending to the match.

There were heated exchanges among players as well. City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma was guided down the tunnel, while Newcastle midfielder Joelinton was held back by manager Eddie Howe.

Guardiola also exchanged words with Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes.

Speaking about Guimaraes, Guardiola added, “We have known Bruno for many, many years, and every time after the game, even at the Etihad, we talk in the tunnel or wherever we talk, always.

I don’t know what happened. Our paths always cross, and I always have a good relationship with him. I love it. I’m an emotional guy, I love to talk and move my hands and my arms and everything.”

The City boss said he hoped to move on quickly from the incident, reinforcing his commitment to passion, responsibility and respect in football.
