A first-year female undergraduate is seized in an off-campus attack in Bokkos, raising fresh concerns about student safety as the university struggles to accommodate nearly 20,000 students.
Suspected kidnappers abducted a 100-level female student of Plateau State University (PLASU), Bokkos, and shot another person during an attack on an off-campus residential community in Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State, at about 8.40 pm on Saturday, October 31, 2026.

The incident has renewed concerns about the safety of students living outside the university’s premises, with the whereabouts of the abducted undergraduate still unknown in reports available on Monday, November 2.
According to accounts from students and university personnel, the victim was in the company of another female student when the attackers seized her. Her identity has not been publicly disclosed.
A student of the institution, who spoke to journalists in Jos on Sunday on condition of anonymity, confirmed the abduction and expressed concern about the security situation around the university community.
“Yes, the student was taken away by the attackers last night, and we have not seen her since then. She lives off-campus, but I don’t know her personally,” the student said.
The student appealed to security agencies to intensify efforts to locate the undergraduate and secure her safe return.
The attack reportedly involved the shooting of another person, although the victim’s identity, condition and circumstances surrounding the shooting had not been independently established in the initial accounts.
A member of the university’s staff also confirmed that management had received reports of a shooting in one of the off-campus residential areas, describing the development as the second reported shooting incident involving the area within four weeks.
“The university is aware of a reported shooting incident in one of the off-campus student residential areas. This would be the second such incident in four weeks,” the staff member said.
The university representative expressed concern that students living outside the institution’s grounds were exposed to security threats, even though the latest attack did not occur within the campus.
“While the incident did not occur within the university campus, which remains our direct responsibility to secure, we are deeply concerned that any of our students living off-campus should face such threats to their safety,” the staff member added.
The latest incident has drawn attention to a longstanding accommodation challenge at PLASU, where limited hostel capacity means that most students depend on private accommodation in surrounding communities.
According to the university staff member, the institution currently has accommodation for approximately 1,000 students, despite having a population approaching 20,000.
This leaves a substantial number of undergraduates living outside the campus, where access to university-controlled security arrangements may be limited.
The staff member said the administration of Vice-Chancellor, Professor Shadrack Best, had been making efforts to provide safer on-campus accommodation but faced significant financial constraints.
The university also acknowledged the contributions of Plateau State Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, who serves as its Visitor, and the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) towards infrastructure development.
Management intends to continue engaging relevant authorities to expand student accommodation and strengthen security arrangements.
The concerns are not entirely new. In an earlier institutional statement published on the university’s official website, PLASU highlighted the vulnerability of students living outside the campus, noting that more than 95 per cent of its students resided off-campus.
The university also identified kidnapping and other security threats in surrounding communities among the challenges requiring government intervention.
The latest abduction therefore comes against a background of acknowledged security concerns, placing renewed attention on the need for cooperation between the institution, security agencies, government authorities and neighbouring communities.
Bokkos Local Government Area has also experienced wider security challenges. On October 5, 2026, reports emerged that suspected gunmen had attacked vigilantes at Angwan Tsarki in the Mangor area of Bokkos, killing two people and injuring three others, according to residents quoted by Premium Times.
Although the earlier incident involved a different location and set of victims, it illustrates the broader security pressures facing communities across the local government area.
The latest attack has also raised questions about how universities can protect students who cannot be accommodated within their campuses, particularly in institutions where residential facilities fall significantly short of enrolment numbers.
For students and their families, the immediate concern remains the safe return of the abducted undergraduate and the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Meanwhile, attempts to obtain an official response from the Plateau State Police Command were unsuccessful at the time of the initial reports.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Alfred Alabo, could not be reached for comment.
There was also no publicly confirmed information in the reports reviewed about arrests, the identity of the attackers, a ransom demand or the recovery of the abducted student.
The university’s acknowledgement of the incident has brought the security of off-campus student communities into sharper focus, particularly as accommodation shortages continue to place many undergraduates beyond the institution’s immediate residential environment.
The situation calls for coordinated attention from university management, the Plateau State Government, the police and community security stakeholders, with the immediate priority being the safe return of the abducted student and appropriate assistance for the person who was shot.

Until further official information emerges, the circumstances of the attack and the whereabouts of the victim remain matters of serious concern to the PLASU community.
