UK corn seller drives Benz, Portable defends Remi Tinubu’s advice

The Nigerian singer reflects on losing his mother and how selling sachet water helped shape his journey to success

Nigerian singer Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, has opened up about the profound impact of losing his mother at the age of 13, revealing that the tragedy forced him to grow up quickly and find ways to survive on his own.

Speaking during an appearance on The Honest Bunch Podcast, the controversial artiste said the experience transformed his outlook on life, teaching him resilience and self-reliance long before he rose to fame in Nigeria’s music industry.

Portable explained that although relatives and other people were around after his mother’s death, none could replace the care, guidance and support she had provided.

“I lost my mother when I was 13. There were people around me, but they could not take care of me the way my mother would have,” he said.

The singer recalled that his mother ensured he had food to eat and regularly gave him pocket money while she was alive. Her death, however, left him with little choice but to fend for himself.

“My mother used to give me food and pocket money. After she died, I began selling pure water to take care of myself,” Portable said.

According to the singer, the difficult period became a defining chapter in his life. He said working on the streets exposed him to practical lessons about determination and survival that formal education alone could not have provided.

Portable added that the challenges he faced during his teenage years instilled a strong work ethic that continues to influence his approach to life and his music career.

The singer, who shot to national prominence with his breakout hit “Zazoo Zeh” in 2021, has frequently spoken about his humble beginnings and the hardships he endured before achieving commercial success.

His rise from street hustles to becoming one of Nigeria’s most recognisable entertainers has remained a recurring theme in his public appearances and music.

Known for his outspoken personality and unconventional style, Portable often shares personal experiences with fans, offering glimpses into the struggles that shaped his journey.
