On Tuesday, President Bola Tinubu, in a joint session of the National Assembly, announced the reintroduction of Nigeria’s former national anthem, “Nigeria, We Hail Thee.” This anthem, initially adopted in 1960, had been replaced in 1978 during the military regime of Olusegun Obasanjo.
President Tinubu confirmed the change by arriving at the session and declaring “Nigeria, We Hail Thee” as the new national anthem. He then joined lawmakers in singing the anthem, marking its official reinstatement.
See lyrics of the newly approved Nigerian national anthem here;
Nigeria we hail thee
Our own dear native land
Though tribes and tongue may differ
In brotherhood, we stand
Nigerians all, are proud to serve
Our sovereign Motherland.
Our flag shall be a symbol
That truth and justice reign
In peace or battle honor’d,
And this we count as gain,
To hand on to our children
A banner without stain.
O God of all creation
Grant this our one request.
Help us to build a nation
Where no man is oppressed
And so with peace and plenty
Nigeria shall be blessed.
