The Peoples Redemption Party has alleged a plot to destabilise its leadership, weaken its grassroots support and undermine efforts to build an opposition coalition ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
The party’s National Chairman, Dr Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, made the allegation in a statement issued in Abuja on Thursday, accusing some former members and serving party officials of attempting to create divisions within the organisation.

According to Baba-Ahmed, those allegedly involved were planning to deploy hundreds of millions of naira to influence members and establish a faction within the party.
However, the statement did not identify the individuals accused or provide evidence to substantiate the allegations.
Baba-Ahmed urged party members and the public to resist what he described as attempts to undermine the PRP, particularly efforts by individuals without authorisation to recruit polling agents on the party’s behalf.
“In particular, attempts to recruit polling agents for the party by persons with no authority to do so should be resisted. Huge amounts of money may be available to buy members’ support for opposition candidates by party officials. These efforts should be resisted and exposed,” he said.
The PRP chairman also warned serving party officials who might be involved in the alleged scheme that they could face disciplinary action.
“The persons in the governing party involved in this scheme have been advised to steer clear of the PRP and distance themselves from attempts to create a faction with their party’s funds and their names. Serving officers of the Party involved in this scheme will face disciplinary measures,” Baba-Ahmed added.
He assured the party’s candidates and supporters that its leadership remained committed to protecting the organisation’s unity and political objectives.
Baba-Ahmed said the PRP would continue participating in efforts to build an opposition coalition capable of challenging the ruling party in the 2027 general elections.
The allegations come amid political realignments and discussions among opposition groups about possible alliances ahead of the polls.
Party unity, candidate selection and cooperation among opposition platforms are expected to remain important issues as political parties prepare for the next election cycle.

The alleged plot, however, remains an accusation by the PRP leadership, and the statement provided no independently verified evidence establishing that the alleged activities had taken place.
