PSG Bayern World Cup clash ends in emotional victory as Dembele, Doue score to send nine-man PSG to semi-finals. Musiala injured. Jota tribute paid

The French champions, reduced to nine men, held firm in a high-octane encounter at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Desire Doue and Ousmane Dembele scored second-half goals that broke Bayern’s resistance in a gripping match. Despite late red cards for Willian Pacho and Lucas Hernandez, PSG advanced past their German rivals in dramatic style.

It was PSG’s first win over Bayern in five attempts, ending a streak that included a 1-0 Champions League loss last November. Luis Enrique’s side produced one of their most emotionally charged performances of the season.

Before kick-off, a minute of silence was observed by the players and the 67,000 fans in memory of Liverpool star Diogo Jota and his brother, Andre Silva, who died in a car crash.

The tribute touched PSG especially, given their Portuguese contingent that includes Vitinha, Joao Neves, and Nuno Mendes.

Luis Enrique made a tactical gamble by benching Dembele, still easing back from a quadriceps injury. Bayern, meanwhile, had Jamal Musiala available following a recent calf issue. But the German star’s night ended in anguish with a horrific ankle injury just before half-time.

The match had all the ingredients of a classic, with two teams committed to high-pressing, attacking football. “It’s the kind of game you’d pay to watch,” Bayern manager Vincent Kompany had said the day before, calling it a “perfect storm” of European giants.

The stadium’s climate-controlled environment set the stage for elite performances on both ends. Goalkeepers Gianluigi Donnarumma and Manuel Neuer were key figures in the opening half, exchanging sharp saves to keep the scoreline level.

Doue went close early, while Donnarumma denied Michael Olise twice. PSG’s Georgian winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia was electric on the left and forced Neuer into an acrobatic stop.

Bayern came close to scoring when Olise’s delivery was met by Dayot Upamecano, but the header was ruled out for offside. England captain Harry Kane also missed a header by inches after excellent build-up play.

Then came Musiala’s devastating injury, as he fell awkwardly after a clash with Donnarumma. The Italian keeper appeared visibly shaken. The match paused briefly, and the mood shifted.

In the second half, Dembele replaced Barcola and nearly scored after Neuer gifted possession outside the box. The French forward stretched but could only steer the ball agonisingly wide.

Eventually, PSG struck through Doue after Kane’s mistake led to a quick counter. The 20-year-old cut inside and drilled a low effort past Neuer at the near post. It was a moment of maturity and quality from a player fast becoming a PSG icon.

Hope briefly returned for Bayern when Pacho was shown red for a reckless tackle on Leon Goretzka in the 83rd minute. Kane thought he had equalised but was once again denied by the offside flag.

Hernandez was sent off minutes later for a stray elbow, putting PSG’s defence under immense pressure. But Dembele, who had been dangerous since coming on, sealed the result with a composed finish after Hakimi’s solo run.

After scoring, Dembele honoured Diogo Jota with a video-game celebration. “It was for Jota,” Dembele later said. “We’re thinking of him.”

PSG Bayern World Cup ties have always delivered, but this was something else. PSG now head to New Jersey for a semi-final showdown against either Real Madrid or Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday.

It was a statement victory from a PSG side that overcame injuries, adversity, and emotion to keep their treble dream alive in the expanded tournament’s fiercest clash yet.
