Ray Emodi Quits Nollywood after traumatic on-set experiences and family pressure, shifting focus to music for creative freedom and well-being

Ray Emodi, Nigerian actor and YouTube film star, announced in Lagos on 24 February 2026 that he is stepping away from Nollywood, citing traumatic on-set experiences, family pressure, and concerns for his mental health as key reasons.

In an Instagram video, Ray Emodi revealed that he had worked in life-threatening conditions, including a production where gunshots were audible due to unrest in a neighbouring town.

“I have stopped acting in films. I quit,” he said.

“There was a time I never thought I would say that sentence, even for a short period of time. But I won’t lie.”

The actor recounted a particularly tense shoot in which cast and crew continued filming despite the nearby gunfire.

“We were literally hearing gunshots. There was like a craziness going on in the town next to our town, and we were still shooting,” Ray Emodi explained.

Family expectations weighed heavily on the decision. Ray Emodi said his relatives expressed concern over reputation and long-standing family traditions.

“This is a decision that has come with a lot of consequences. My family does not support this. It is a family with strict rules and a reputation to protect, which is understandable, and I respect them,” he stated.

Mental health considerations were also central. Ray Emodi admitted that while he enjoyed some of the most rewarding moments of his career on set, it became increasingly difficult to continue accepting roles under stressful circumstances.

“It is not easy to say no. It is difficult to turn them down when they call you, but I had to say no. I had to stop saying yes,” he added.

Ray Emodi revealed plans to pivot to music, a passion he has nurtured for years. He assured supporters that he will continue producing quality content.

“I love music. I have always loved music. I make good music. I want you guys to come with me on this journey. I love every single Nollywood fan, and I am not leaving you. I am just going to make music,” he said.

During his acting career, Ray Emodi featured alongside prominent Nollywood actors including Mercy Johnson-Okojie, Uju Okoli and Ruth Kadiri.

The actor previously took a brief hiatus in 2023 due to anxiety-related issues before returning to the screen.
