Mercy Johnson, Funke Akindele pay tribute to Alex Ekubo

Rita Dominic, Funke Akindele, Mercy Johnson and other Nollywood stars have reacted emotionally to reports of Alex Ekubo’s death

Nollywood actors and entertainers have paid emotional tributes to late actor Alex Ekubo following reports that the actor died on Monday, May 11, after battling cancer. The actor was said to be 41 years old.

The shocking development sparked widespread grief across the Nigerian entertainment industry, with several celebrities taking to social media to express heartbreak over Alex Ekubo’s death.

Leading the tributes, Rita Dominic reacted with heartbreak emojis on X, formerly Twitter, while Uche Jombo wrote, “Mercy Oh Lord.”

Kate Henshaw described the development as “terrible news” and prayed for divine intervention, while singer Peter Okoye simply wrote, “RIP.”

Actress Linda Ejiofor expressed disbelief, while Peggy Ovire said she was “truly lost for words” over the painful loss.

Mercy Johnson described the situation as one of the most painful goodbyes, while Bolanle Ninalowo prayed for healing for the late actor’s family and colleagues.

Actor Mofe Duncan questioned the tragedy in an emotional reaction, while veteran actress Ego Boyo described the news as tragic and prayed for comfort for the family.

Also reacting, Funke Akindele revealed that she had tried reaching out to Alex Ekubo one more time before the devastating news emerged. The actress said she would continue to cherish the good memories they shared.

For months, concerns had grown over the actor’s absence from social media. Alex Ekubo had not posted on Instagram since 2024, prompting speculation among fans and colleagues.

In response to the concerns last year, Oma Nnadi urged people to stop searching for the actor online, insisting that he was healthy and simply staying away from social media.

The late actor was later seen in a video playing with children, briefly calming fears among supporters.

Before his reported death, Alex Ekubo had shared several reflective messages on life and human relationships.

During the mourning period for late singer Mohbad in 2023, the actor spoke about the irony of people mourning the dead while neglecting the living.

Following the death of actor Junior Pope, Alex Ekubo also shared a powerful message urging people to show wisdom and genuine sympathy during difficult moments instead of turning tragedies into content.
