Despite rallying from 2–0 down to force penalties, United fell 12–11 in a marathon shootout with Bryan Mbeumo missing the decisive kick by hitting the bar.

Grimsby, fearless and relentless, outplayed their Premier League opponents and fully earned their famous win at Blundell Park.

Speaking after the shock result, Ruben Amorim apologised to fans, calling the loss unacceptable and admitting the team lacked both urgency and fight.

“Everything is so important in this club. We should do so much better. I just have to say sorry to our fans,” Amorim said during the post-match press conference.

The Portuguese coach, already under scrutiny, hinted at deeper issues within the squad, stating,

“The players spoke really loud today what they want.”

He conceded that United’s poor first half and lack of mental preparation set the tone for the disastrous performance.

“The way we started, we were not even here… Football was fair today. The best team won.”

With United now out of the League Cup, attention turns to the FA Cup and remaining league fixtures as their only realistic paths to silverware this season.

Amorim said he would take time during the international break to reflect, but his tone suggested that pressure on his job is now reaching a critical point.
