Dr Aminu Yusuf from Niger State was confirmed as the new Chairman of the NPC, while Hon. Kigbu Joseph Haruna (Nasarawa) and Tonga Betara Bularafa (Yobe) were approved as National Commissioners.
The resolution came after the Senate adopted the recommendations of the Committee on National Identity and National Population, led by Senator Victor Umeh (LP – Anambra Central).
“They were all found to be fit and proper persons for their respective roles,” Umeh stated while presenting the report.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had earlier forwarded the names to the Senate for screening and confirmation.
The process received unanimous support during a voice vote conducted by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
Akpabio praised the nominees’ integrity and acknowledged the importance of the commission in national development:
“Population census is a very dicey thing. It helps in all facets of planning. May they succeed where others failed,” he remarked.
“I congratulate the President for fishing out people of integrity for appointment into key positions.”
The confirmation is considered crucial ahead of the anticipated national census, which has faced repeated delays and political complexities.
