The tragic death of Barrister Eli Ugwu, a senior lawyer in Enugu State, has plunged the community of Nsukka into profound sorrow. Reports indicate that Ugwu was fatally shot in Kogi State under murky circumstances while attempting to deliver ransom to kidnappers who had abducted his cousin.

Details emerging from the incident have stirred controversies surrounding the circumstances of Ugwu’s demise. Initial accounts suggested that he was shot by the kidnappers after fulfilling their ransom demands. However, subsequent reports have surfaced, suggesting that Ugwu was shot by policemen as he emerged from the bush with his cousin, who had been released by the kidnappers.

A Facebook user, Senator Chijinkem Ugwuanyi, lamented the loss, stating, “A part of us is Gone! He was shot dead in Kogi state while trying to pay ransom for his kidnapped cousin.”

However, additional sources, including a senior lawyer who spoke anonymously, revealed that Ugwu and his cousin were shot by policemen after successfully delivering the ransom. “Eli was shot dead but his cousin (the kidnap victim) is responding to treatment. It’s a huge blow,” the lawyer stated.

Eli Ugwu was an esteemed member of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Nsukka branch, contributing significantly to the legal fraternity until his untimely demise. Despite the gravity of the situation, the Kogi State Police Command has yet to issue any official statement regarding the incident, leaving many questions unanswered and intensifying the anguish felt by Ugwu’s family, colleagues, and community.
