Super Eagles AFCON bronze win draws Federal Government praise after Nigeria defeated Egypt to secure third place at the 2025 tournament

The Federal Government of Nigeria has congratulated the Super Eagles following their bronze medal victory at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, after defeating Egypt’s Pharaohs in the third-place match in Casablanca.

The commendation was contained in a statement issued on Saturday by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, who praised the national team’s performance and resilience throughout the tournament.

Idris said the Super Eagles upheld Nigeria’s football heritage with courage and unity, noting that the team inspired millions of Nigerians at home and in the diaspora through their display of discipline and determination.

“Your performance throughout the tournament was a source of pride and joy for our nation,” the minister said. “From the group stages to the final whistle in Casablanca, you showed heart, skill and belief in one another.”

The minister added that securing the bronze medal further strengthened Nigeria’s impressive record at the Africa Cup of Nations, reaffirming the country’s status as a powerhouse in African football.

He also commended the coaches, support staff and players for their dedication and sacrifice, stressing that their collective effort reflected the power of teamwork and national pride.

“Although the ultimate prize may have eluded you this time, this bronze medal was earned with dignity and effort,” Idris said, urging the team to draw strength from the achievement as they prepare for future challenges.

Nigeria secured third place after defeating Egypt 4 to 2 on penalties in a tense playoff at the Stade Mohammed V, Casablanca, following a goalless draw at the end of regulation time.

Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali emerged as the decisive figure in the shootout, saving penalties from Mohamed Salah and Oumar Marmoush to seal Nigeria’s ninth third-place finish in AFCON history and preserve the Super Eagles’ perfect record in third-place playoff matches.
