Ndidi described the Super Eagles Portugal friendly as a crucial moment in the team’s ongoing development under head coach Éric Chelle, as Nigeria continue preparations for future international competitions.
Super Eagles head into the fixture in encouraging form, with four wins and two draws from their last six matches, and just one regulation defeat in 24 games since Chelle took charge in January 2025.
Despite the strong run, Ndidi stressed that facing a World Cup-bound Portugal side represents a significant step up in quality and intensity for the African side.
“It will be a very good test for us. We faced the first test against Poland, and Portugal is a great team with great players as well,” Ndidi said during a pre-match press conference.
He added that the Super Eagles Portugal friendly is about growth and collective improvement, noting that the squad remains focused on its long-term objectives rather than the reputation of their opponents.
“It will be a massive test for us as a group, to our vision, to our aim as a team, to our growth. It will definitely be a good test for us,” he said.
The fixture also carries historical significance, with Portugal having defeated Nigeria 4-0 in their previous meeting four years ago, a result that still resonates among supporters.
However, Ndidi insisted that the current squad is approaching the encounter with confidence and determination, emphasising a winning mentality regardless of opposition.
“We don’t know care who we are playing. Even against the biggest countries in the world, the most important thing is that we are ready to win,” he said.
