Troost-Ekong considers retirement after World Cup exit

Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong considers international retirement after Nigeria fails to qualify for the 2026 World Cup and AFCON uncertainty

Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong is reportedly considering retirement from international football following Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The speculation emerged after Nigeria’s recent defeat to the Democratic Republic of Congo, a result that has sparked widespread criticism of the team’s overall performance.

Veteran defender Troost-Ekong, 32, reportedly shared his uncertainty about continuing with the national team in an emotional dressing-room discussion with teammates.

Respected journalist Mike Osarieme (MikeThePundit) revealed that Troost-Ekong told colleagues, “I will watch you as a fan at the AFCON,” signaling a possible withdrawal from international duty ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco this December.

The captain’s reduced playing time in recent matches may be influencing his contemplation of retirement.

He has been left out of the starting lineup in the last three Super Eagles fixtures, despite retaining the armband and leadership responsibilities.

Currently playing for Al-Kholood in Saudi Arabia, Troost-Ekong now faces an uncertain future with Nigeria as he evaluates his next steps and reflects on a distinguished international career that has spanned over a decade.

Fans and analysts will closely monitor developments ahead of AFCON, where his presence—or absence—could significantly impact Nigeria’s campaign.
