Trump 2026 midterms impeachment warning as president tells Republicans loss could lead to impeachment and urges party unity ahead of November elections

US President Donald Trump on Tuesday warned Republican lawmakers that the party must secure victory in the 2026 congressional midterm elections or risk Democrats pushing to impeach him again.

Addressing members of the House Republican Conference during a policy retreat in Washington, DC, Trump stressed the high political stakes ahead of the November polls.

“You’ve got to win the midterms, because, if we don’t win the midterms, it’s just going to be — I mean, they’ll find a reason to impeach me. I’ll get impeached,” he said.

Trump reiterated that losing control of Congress could stall his legislative agenda and expose his administration to heightened scrutiny through investigations, potentially setting the stage for fresh impeachment proceedings by Democrats if they regain a majority.

Speaking at the retreat held at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts — where he urged Republicans to set aside internal disagreements — Trump also called on lawmakers to champion GOP policies on gender, healthcare and election integrity.

The president’s comments reflect growing concern within his party as Republicans narrowly control the US House of Representatives.

Trump criticised broader political trends, lamenting the historical tendency for the president’s party to lose seats in midterm elections.

Trump has been impeached twice during his first term — in 2019 and 2021 — and was acquitted by the Senate both times.

His warning underscores the fraught political atmosphere as the 2026 midterms approach and the Republican Party seeks to defend its slim congressional majority.
