The convicts were arrested at a hotel in Barnawa, Kaduna in a sting operation prompted by intelligence on their alleged internet fraud-related activities. The investigation established that they had impersonated several personalities in the social media and used the false identities to defraud unsuspecting victims.
The charge against Salim reads: “That you, Salim Bashir ( aka Owen Walker), sometime in March 2023 within the Kaduna Judicial Division of the High Court with intent to defraud, falsely presented yourself as one Owen Walker, United States of America (USA) citizen and in such assumed character cheated one Justus Ann the sum of $250(Two Hundred and Fifty Dollars) through your Facebook account and black online dating site known as BLK and you thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 142 of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law, 2017 and punishable under the same Law”.
