UBA diaspora healthcare investment initiative targets Nigerian-American doctors to support hospitals and medical infrastructure in Nigeria

United Bank for Africa has unveiled a new diaspora-focused healthcare investment initiative aimed at mobilising Nigerian-American medical professionals to support healthcare infrastructure development in Nigeria.

The bank announced the initiative during the 2026 ANPA Carolinas Symposium held in Charlotte, where more than 170 physicians and healthcare professionals gathered for discussions on medical and scientific issues affecting communities across North America, the Caribbean and Africa.

Speaking at the symposium, UBA’s Head of Diaspora Banking, Anant Rao, urged members of the Nigerian diaspora to move beyond remittances and participate more directly in long-term healthcare institution-building in Nigeria.

“The financial infrastructure required to connect your success abroad to sustainable institutional impact at home has not been intentionally designed for diaspora healthcare investors until now,” Rao said.

During the event, the bank introduced the ANPA–UBA Diaspora Healthcare Investment Platform, a professionally managed investment structure intended to channel diaspora funding into specialist hospitals, diagnostic centres, telemedicine systems and medical training institutions.

According to Rao, the platform is designed to generate financial returns for investors while also strengthening Nigeria’s healthcare system.

“Every dollar invested delivers a dual return, creating value for investors while contributing meaningfully to Nigeria’s healthcare future,” he said.

Under the arrangement, United Bank for Africa will act as custodian and structuring bank, while United Capital Asset Management will serve as fund manager.

The proposed investment framework forms part of the bank’s wider strategy to deepen engagement with Nigerians in the diaspora and expand access to structured investment opportunities tied to national development.

Rao also proposed a Memorandum of Understanding between UBA and the South Carolina and North Carolina chapters of the Association of Nigerian Physicians in the Americas.

The proposed partnership includes preferred banking services for ANPA members, quarterly financial education sessions, the establishment of a joint healthcare infrastructure fund, a dedicated wealth and legacy desk, access to family healthcare plans through Avon HMO and a co-matching contribution structure to support healthcare-focused impact projects.

The bank said the initiative builds on its existing diaspora banking offerings, which include multi-currency Non-Resident Nigerian accounts, fixed-income and dollar-denominated investment products, elder-care trust solutions and private wealth management services targeted at diaspora professionals.

UBA described the symposium as another milestone in its broader diaspora engagement strategy and reiterated its belief that diaspora capital could play a transformative role in accelerating healthcare and infrastructure development across Africa.

The UBA diaspora healthcare investment initiative comes at a time when Nigeria continues to face mounting pressure on healthcare infrastructure, limited specialist facilities and growing demand for private-sector participation in healthcare financing.
