At the Rayburn House Office Building, he met with lawmakers, State Department officials, and congressional aides, thanking them for their efforts in securing his freedom.
Dressed in a dark blue suit, his clean-shaven head and slight limp reflected his recent struggles, including emergency spinal surgery in Georgia before his return to the US.
His release followed diplomatic negotiations between the US and Nigeria, with President Joe Biden personally thanking Nigerian President Bola Tinubu for his role in securing Gambaryan’s return.
The deal also involved continued US cooperation in Nigeria’s investigation of Binance, which remains ongoing. Binance expressed relief at Gambaryan’s return, stating its commitment to defending itself against allegations while fostering a brighter future for the blockchain industry. Meanwhile, Nigerian authorities have not commented on the case.
Gambaryan, formerly a top investigator tackling financial crimes, remains uncertain about his next steps. While cryptocurrency insiders reportedly suggested him for key regulatory roles under a potential Trump administration, he insists he needs time to recover.
However, his ordeal in Nigeria has left him seeking accountability. He has already filed a human rights lawsuit against the Nigerian government and hinted at personal efforts to hold those responsible for his detention to account.
Reflecting on his experience, he admitted it left him angrier but driven by a sense of justice rather than revenge. Lighting a cigarette outside his Arlington hotel, he expressed gratitude for his freedom, his family, and the ability to walk again. Yet, his relentless pursuit of justice remains unchanged.
