Five markets in the Mushin area of Lagos State have been reopened, according to the state government.
In a statement issued today, the state government stated that “environmental infractions, including indiscriminate waste dumping,” were the reason the markets were temporarily closed.
Mushin Main Markets, Ojuwoye, Awolowo, Irepodun, and Daleko markets are the five that have reopened.
The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, also stated why the state government decided to temporarily close the markets, saying it was necessary.
Wahab said, “Our decision to close the Mushin markets was rooted in the urgent need to rectify environmental malpractices that posed a threat to public health and the overall well-being of people living in the area.”
The Managing Director/CEO of the Lagos Waste Management Authority, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, responding to Wahab’s statement, said authorities will rest when the state “assumes a cleaner and healthier form.”
