Father of late Sylvester Oromoni rejects coroner inquest judgment

Mr. Sylvester Oromoni Snr, the father of the late 12-year-old student of Dowen College, Lekki, Sylvester, has expressed dissatisfaction with the judgment of the Coroner Inquest that attributed his son’s death to negligence.

The Coroner Magistrate, Mikhail Kadiri, had earlier ruled on April 15, holding that the teenager’s death was a result of parental and medical negligence. Kadiri stated that the failure to promptly treat the boy’s enlarged liver, discovered by the family doctor in Warri, ultimately led to his demise.

Initially, Sylvester’s death on November 30, 2021, was linked to bullying and an alleged poisonous substance forced upon him at the school. However, the Coroner’s recent findings shifted the focus to medical negligence.

In response to the judgment, Mr. Oromoni Sr. voiced his disagreement, questioning the conclusive evidence presented during the inquest. He expressed concerns over the lack of definitive testing regarding the substance found in his son’s body.

“Medical experts did not give a concluding result. They said they saw a substance inside the body of the boy, and what was the substance? Was it tested? It wasn’t tested. So this (the judgment) is not the end of the case. As far as I am concerned, it does not represent the true procedure of the evidence taken,” Mr. Oromoni Sr. stated while addressing reporters.

Mr. Oromoni Sr.’s rejection of the judgment indicates a potential continuation of legal proceedings as he seeks clarity and justice regarding the circumstances surrounding his son’s tragic passing.
