Adeyemi Ikuforiji, the former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, and his assistant, Oyebode Atoyebi, have been acquitted of a N338.8 million money laundering charge by a federal high court. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had charged both men with 54 counts related to alleged money laundering activities.
The charges against Ikuforiji and Atoyebi included allegations of accepting cash payments totaling N338.8 million from the House of Assembly without involving a financial institution, in violation of money laundering laws. They were initially arraigned in 2012 before Judge Okechukwu Okeke.
On Monday, June 24, the federal high court acquitted both defendants, bringing an end to the lengthy legal proceedings. The court’s decision marks a significant development in the high-profile case that has drawn substantial public attention.
